St. Francis 5th Grade

• About Me: I have a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis on Science and Math, as well as, a Masters Degree in Curriculum from Michigan State University. I have taught preschool through grade eight and worked in both parochial and public schools. I have lived and taught in Michigan, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. I enjoy walking and doing crafts, when I have the time. I also am a huge sports fan, my favorite being football. I like to garden and keep busy with the flower beds and paths my husband and I have created around our home.

• Philosophy: That each student has his or her own unique talents and abilities and to help them recognize their strengths, work on their weaknesses, and achieve to their full potential.

• Goals:
  • To introduce and teach the Fifth grade curriculum as set by the Diocese.
  • To build better organizational and time management skills.
  • To instill pride in their work and encourage working to their highest potential.
  • To encourage creativity and problem solving strategies.
  • To develop and grow in their faith and how they practice it.

• Religion: We discuss the sacraments, learn to use the Bible, pray and work on putting what we have learned about faith into practice.

• Math: We continue to develop our computation skills, introduce geometry, improve our understanding of fractions, and work on improving our problem solving strategies. Practice those math fact with Interactive Math Facts.

• Science: We begin with minerals, and proceed through matter, our environment, the universe, and light and sound.

• Languages: We concentrate on learning the parts of speech and fine tune our grammar skills. We also work on writing better paragraphs by improving our sentence structure and especially our topic and concluding sentences.

• Vocabulary and Spelling: We work on becoming better spellers and increasing our vocabulary.

• Penmanship: We work on improving the legibility, shape, size, and slant of our letters.

• Reading: We practice our reading skills and work on strategies to help our comprehension.

• Social Studies: is taught by Ms. Sylvain
